Found objects often become subjects for my abstract art prints.
When I make a discovery - 'a find,' I leave what I find in situ. I create digital photographs, often composed for me, by capricious winds sweeping discarded objects on streetscapes; or waves surging flotsam and jetsam onto deserted winter beaches.
I attempt to capture the tension interlocking these collisions of mass with force; developing and creating layered, nuanced combinations for my subject matter.
Nature, the ultimate alchemist, - is constantly interacting with human activity and it's material existence. Our planet is constantly processing, rendering, redistributing, and disintegrating matter, in spite of our worst behaviors, and is endlessly attempting to renew our home.
This power struggle, cycling between the materials and actions of man, pitted against Nature's reactions, creates a dynamism, and catalyst for perpetual change. I attempt to visually harness that exuberance into my art.
My images are ephemera, sometimes momentia mori, or vanitas creations of the flash point where this interface become permanently entwined - Man & Nature.
A life-long love for the seashore persists. I'm frequently drawn to comb its beaches, dunes, and rock pool jetties -
"...for in their retreat,
the purging waves
decant
jumbled traces
of man's and the sea's
commingled detritus.
Tell-tale relics,
evidential artifacts,
marking unfortunate,
degrading collisions
of man with nature..." - Nautilus Weeps, 2021 / JS
My art process includes :
JE ME SOUVIENS . . . Reminiscing - Romancing - Remembering -
I form layered images by blending contemporary experiences with my dreams, and reveries culled from revisiting, and traversing, mental and emotional landscapes, and childhood memories,
In my art-making: atmosphere, and the ambience of recollection, are conceived through mystic pilgrimages back-and-forth in time.
Alternating flashes of my subconscious mesh, lace and flavor my work...je me souviens.
